Lewa is home to one of the highest densities of wildlife in Kenya, including more than 10% of the country’s black and white rhinos. But we chose this place not just for its extraordinary game viewing, but also for its thoughtful and careful stewardship of the environment, wildlife, and surrounding communities. It was originally established in 1924 and operated by the Craig family as a private cattle ranch. But with Kenya’s Rhino population down from some 20,000 only ten years earlier to just a few hundred by the mid 1980’s, the Craigs decided to act. They established a rhino sanctuary at the western end of their ranch and a decade later expanded the conservancy to encompass their entire ranch.
The Craig family still lives on the Lewa property, and today their Conservancy has become a model and catalyst for conservation and development. In addition to providing a protected habitat for a rich variety of big game, the Conservancy’s neighboring communities are helped through its education programs, women’s micro-credit initiatives, community-managed water projects, and access to healthcare at its four clinics.
Your day at Lewa will be highlighted by a thrilling variety of expertly-guided safari activities - including game drives, a bush picnic, guided nature walks and sundowners. With healthy resident populations of diverse wildlife including the Big Five, the game viewing here promises to be spectacular. Meals B+L+D
