Today’s sightseeing begins with the beautiful Summer Palace, erstwhile seasonal retreat of China’s emperors. Set on wooded hills surrounding a tranquil lake, this assemblage of pavilions, palaces and gardens offers a fascinating look into Imperial life long ago. Then explore the narrow lanes of a Hutong, one of the city's few remaining enclaves of traditional, centuries-old courtyard homes. Visit a local family living to gain a deeper understanding of life in Beijing's traditional neigborhoods. After lunch, stand in Tiananmen Square, admiring the architectural landmarks that surround one of the world’s grandest public plazas, and then follow in the footsteps of Ming Dynasty Emperors on an expertly-guided tour through the magnificent Forbidden City. Situated farther from the capital than other sections of China’s most famous landmark, the Great Wall  at Mutianyu draws fewer visitors. And with its many defensive towers and splendid setting amidst the rugged mountains, Mutianyu offers a more authentic and rewarding experience. Ascend by cable car and walk atop the Great Wall as your expert guide shares exciting stories and legends from China’s long, fascinating history.  After lunch, you’ll enjoy a guided tour of the Temple of Heaven ; it’s a resplendent example of Ming Dynasty design and engineering that also offers fascinating insight into ancient Chinese beliefs in numerology and cosmology.
