Setting out after breakfast, your full-day privately guided tour encompasses all of the sights included on Days 2 + 3 of our one-week core program: Qutab Minar, a drive past the President’s Estate and India Gate, Bangla Sahib, Jama Masjid, a pedicab adventure through Old Delhi and the Spice Market. You’ll be chauffeured to the airport for your included flight to Amritsar where you’ll be met and escorted to the 5-star Taj Swarna Hotel. This evening, we’ll take you to the magnificent Golden Temple. In addition to experiencing the Temple’s tranquil and spiritually evocative atmosphere, your private guide will introduce you to Sikh leaders who will be happy to answer your questions and to acquaint you with the basic tenets and practices of Sikhism.

After breakfast, return to the Golden Temple to behold its shimmering façade in the bright light of morning. Not far from the Temple is a stirring and sobering memorial dedicated to the people who perished during the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919. You’ll also enjoy a privately guided tour of the splendid Ram Bagh Garden, laid out by the first Sikh ruler in the beginning of the 19th century. In the adjacent Summer Palace, you’ll find a museum filled with interesting artifacts that will deepen your understanding of the region’s history and culture.

Later this afternoon, you’ll travel about 18 miles outside of town to the Wagah Border, the only open crossing point between India and Pakistan. Just before the sun sets, you’ll witness an incredible ceremony that has unfolded here every evening since 1959. With great pomp and fanfare accompanied by patriotic music from both sides, you’ll see Indian Border Security Forces and Pakistani Rangers march forth to lower their respective flags. After the ceremony, you’ll return to the Taj Swarna Hotel in Amritsar.  Meals B

Udaipur has been called India’s “City of Dreams” and you’ll come to appreciate why as you join your engaging native-born guide for a private sightseeing tour.  The day begins at the City Palace Museum. Built in 1725, this is one of the world’s largest palace complexes and today it’s a veritable museum filled with superb examples of Mogul art and furnishings all displayed amidst lavish interiors.

From the Palace, you’ll enjoy a guided walk through a colorful and bustling city market to visit Jagdish Temple; dedicated to Lord Vishnu, this 17th-century architectural treasure is heralded for its towering tiers of bas relief carvings. At the Rajasthan Art School, you’ll see young and talented artists learning and preserving the ancient Rajasthani tradition of miniature paintings. Finish your day on a delightful high note with a cruise across the tranquil waters of Lake Pichola. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and a free morning to experience the majestic mountain setting of your hotel or luxury camp. Then after lunch, join your private guide for an excursion to Matho, a small village situated at the mouth of a dramatic mountain gorge. Here you’ll visit the impressive Matho Monastery, founded in the 15th century and noted for its 600-year-old Buddhist Thangka paintings.

Then return to Leh for a guided walk along its evocative labyrinthine streets, many of them offering wonderful views of the 17th-century Leh Palace sitting on a ridge high above town. As you explore the streets and lively markets, your personal guide will offer fascinating insight into the region’s enduring traditions and the many exotic items for sale. Your touring ends at Shanti Stupa, an imposing white-spired dome with sweeping views over the surrounding landscape and its dramatic mountain backdrop.  Meals B+L+D

Mountain-bound and isolated from the rest of the world behind sheer walls of rock and ice, Ladakh encompasses the highest inhabited land in the world. And here in this remote mountain region, rich traditions of Mahayana Buddhism still flourish in their purest form as they have for centuries. Early this morning, your private car, driver and guide will take you to the magnificent Thiksey Monastery, arriving in time for the sunrise prayer ceremony and an unforgettable experience of these enduring traditions.

Your full-day private sightseeing tour explores one of the world’s greatest masterpieces of religious art. The oldest of the Buddhist cave monuments at Ajanta date back more than 2,000 years, with a second principle group that was carved and decorated in the 5th and 6th centuries during the Gupta era. These groups of monuments represent two important periods of Indian history and illustrate the evolution of Indian art over the centuries. This evening, you’ll enjoy dinner with wine at your hotel.  Meals B

After breakfast and check out, your private car, driver and guide will be waiting to take you to the spectacular cave temples of Ellora. Dating back more than 1,000 years, these 34 rock-cut monasteries and temples were carved side by side into a basalt cliff, extending more than 1.2 miles. The Ellora Caves not only bear witness to three great religions (Buddhism, Brahminical Hinduism and Jainism), but are also a testament to the spirit of tolerance which characterized ancient India and allowed these three religions to establish their sanctuaries in a single place.

After breakfast on the final day of your one-week India In-Style tour, your private car and driver will take you on the scenic overland journey to the historic town of Sawai Madhopur. Here just minutes away from the celebrated Ranthambore Tiger Reserve, you’ll check in to The Oberoi Vanyavilas. Surrounded by 20 verdant acres on the edge of the jungle, The Oberoi’s luxurious under-canvas suites feature elegant furnishings, pillow menu, individually controlled air conditioning, high speed Internet, DVD and CD player, and a lavish en suite bath with full-length soaking tub and a separate high-pressure shower. Most travelers visit Ranthambore National Park in a traditional Indian canter, an open-air bus that seats 25 people. By special arrangement, you’ll explore the Park in special open-air jeeps that seat only 4 to 6 guests. Our vehicles are much more maneuverable than the canter and can even go off-road. With our experienced trackers in these intimate 4x4 jeeps, you’ll embark on early morning and late afternoon safari excursions when the animals are most active. Ranthambore is home to a variety of wildlife including sloths, bears and hyenas, and with luck, you might even encounter the elusive Bengal tiger.  Meals B+D

On arrival here in one of the world’s oldest cities, you’ll be met and chauffeured to the Taj Nadesar Palace. Our luxury hotel is set amidst gardens, fields and orchards close to the sacred waters of the River Ganges.  Meals B

After breakfast and a leisurely morning, your private car, driver and guide will be waiting to show you the sights and traditions of this ancient city. Your touring begins in Sarai Mohana, a riverside village celebrated for the skill of its weavers. With lavish embroidery often using gold and silver thread, the silk brocade produced by these villagers is used in the finest saris – worn by brides and for special festivals and events. Back in the city center, you’ll visit one of Varanasi’s many ghats – riverfront steps that lead down to the Ganges. Regarded as one of the most sacred along the river, the Manikarnika Ghat is important to Hindu religion and mythology, and it’s believed that cremation at this site ensures that one’s soul will rest in everlasting peace.

This evening, we’ll take you to Dashashwamedh Ghat. Situated close to Vishwanath Temple with broad steps leading down to the Ganges, this is an evocative setting to experience the Aarti Ceremony, an ancient and mesmerizing Hindu ritual of light and devotion.  Meals B

Arise early this morning and journey to the banks of the Ganges for a guided boat excursion on this sacred river. In the soft golden light of dawn, you’ll witness thousands of devotees descending to these holy waters for purification – a powerfully moving ritual that has played out daily for centuries. This unforgettable excursion ends along one of the many ancient ghats that descend to the riverbanks. From here, a guided stroll through the narrow lanes of Varanasi immerses you in the timeless rhythms that endure in this millennia-old city. Watch as market vendors open for business, and see Assi Ghat; situated where the Assi River flows into the Ganges, these ancient steps are the southernmost of Varanasi’s 88 riverfront ghats. Before returning to your hotel for breakfast, you’ll also visit a wrestling gym and a Sanskrit School – two unique experiences that offer deeper insight into the ancient traditions that still endure here in Varanasi. This morning’s specially-arranged cultural excursion promises evocative moments as you experience this city of 18 million people coming to life for the day. Arising early, your private guide will take you to the city’s colorful waterfront as the fishing fleet arrives with their catch – up to 25 tons of fish being unloaded on the docks and graded for the lively auctions to follow. In the streets, you’ll see thousands of vendors preparing for the day, from young men and women sorting newspapers into 7 different languages to delivery teams laden with meat, fruits and vegetables bound for markets across the city. After this unforgettable experience, we’ll take you back to the hotel where a lavish buffet breakfast awaits.

Early this afternoon, you’ll explore more of the city with your personal car, driver and guide. See the impressive Gateway to India, erected along the waterfront to commemorate King George V’s visit to India in 1911, and tour the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Railway Station. Built at the end of the 19th century and formerly known as the Victoria Terminus, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is hailed as an outstanding example of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture. Before returning to our hotel, you’ll also visit the Mangaldas Market where fine Indian textiles have been sold for more than a century.  Meals B

For more than 140 years, the workers at Dhobi Ghat, a virtual outdoor Laundromat, have been hand-washing an estimated 500,000 articles a day – from hotel linens to personal clothing items. There is no other place like this in the world and this morning’s visit offers a fascinating behind-the-scenes look into the people and stories of this sprawling metropolis. Next you’ll visit Dharavi, a densely populated district in the heart of Mumbai. With more than 1 million people living here, Dharavi has been called “Asia’s largest slum”. Although there is indeed evidence of crushing poverty, Dharavi is in fact a hive of entrepreneurship where local businesses, many of them 1-room operations, transact an estimated $1 billion annually. With our native-born guide leading the way, your time here promises to be an enlightening, powerful, eye-opening and inspiring experience of the human spirit.

End your sightseeing with a privately guided tour of Mani Bhavan. Set in the modest 2-story building that served as Mahatma Gandhi’s residence and headquarters from 1917 to 1934, this small museum offers unique insights into his life and work.
