Your full-day private sightseeing tour begins this morning at Shuri Castle c. Originally founded in the 14th-century, this magnificent castle played a vital role in the unification of the island’s feudal states and became the center of the Ryukyu kingdom which ruled the islands for centuries, until Okinawa became a Japanese prefecture in 1879. The approach to this hilltop castle leads through several impressive gates including the vermilion-hued Shureimon Gate and offers panoramic views over Naha and the sea. Then explore along the well-maintained paths that lead deep into Gyokusendo Cave, the largest and most extensive on the island. From Point Manzamo on the island’s northwest coast, you’ll have spectacular views of craggy cliffs, remote beaches, the aquamarine sea and offshore islands. This enriching day of sightseeing ends at the Himeyuri Peace Museum, dedicated to the inspiring work of the Himeyuri Student Corps, schoolgirls who were mobilized as nurses’ assistants during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945.
