Journey to Bayeux + Walking Tour

On the final morning of your 7-day Classic London + Paris by Rail tour, your private car and driver will take you to the train station for the scenic journey to Normandy. Upon arrival in Bayeux, you’ll be escorted to your choice of hotel: The inviting Chateau Saint-Gilles is set in an 18th-century country manor house just a few miles from the Bayeux Cathedral. In the historic heart of Bayeux, the Hotel Le Lion d’Or is located in the town’s old 18th-century post office.

Later this afternoon, enjoy an expertly-guided private walking tour of Bayeux’s beautifully preserved medieval center, filled with cobbled lanes and charming half-timbered houses. You’ll also visit the 11th-century Notre-Dame de Bayeux Cathedral, a magnificent Gothic and Romanesque masterpiece. The rest of your evening is free to enjoy as you wish and to dine at one of Bayeux’s inviting local restaurants.

Day
2

The Normandy Landing Beaches

Enhanced by the historical knowledge and cultural insights of your personal guide, your full-day tour will focus on the American sector of the D-Day landing sites. Begin in Sainte-Mère-Église, the first town liberated by American paratroopers, and see the church where a paratrooper famously became entangled in the steeple; Taken prisoner by the Germans, the soldier John Steele escaped and went on to fight the rest of the war.

Continue to Utah Beach, where the U.S. 4th Infantry Division came ashore on June 6, 1944. At Pointe du Hoc, stand atop the dramatic 100-foot cliffs scaled by U.S. Army Rangers to neutralize German artillery. Then walk the sands of Omaha Beach: The 34,000 American soldiers who landed here saw intense fighting and high casualties, making it a symbol of the fierce resistance faced by the Allied troops. End your sightseeing with time to reflect at the Normandy American Cemetery—where rows of white crosses overlook the coast in solemn tribute to the fallen. Return to your hotel in Bayeux where this evening is at leisure.  Meals B

In Avranches, you’ll visit the lovely Saint-Gervais Basilica that houses the relics of Saint Aubert, the bishop who founded the Mont Saint-Michel Abbey in the 8th century. Then explore the enchanting island commune itself, where medieval streets spiral toward the mountaintop abbey. Tour the abbey’s vaulted halls and monks’ quarters—and take in sweeping views of the surrounding tidal flats.
