Day
1

On arrival at the airport, your Iceland vacation begins as you are warmly greeted and chauffeured to your hotel for an early breakfast. Then for the next 4 hours, your personal car, driver and guide are at your disposal to explore the capital as you wish. The coastline, harbor district and the traditional brightly-painted homes of the Old Quarter would be a terrific place to begin. Architectural enthusiasts will want to see the glass-domed Pearl, an innovative building that showcases Iceland’s sustainable approach to design, engineering and construction.

History buffs may also want to see the Hofdi House, the simple, turn-of-the-century clapboard house where Presidents Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev met in 1986, the historic event that effectively marked the end of the Cold War. We’ve also included entry to the National Museum so you can learn more about Iceland’s history and culture – from the early days of Viking settlement to contemporary life. Then check in to the stylish Canopy by Hilton City-Center. Our deluxe hotel offers spacious guestrooms and free WiFi in a wonderful downtown neighborhood. The balance of your afternoon and evening are yours to relax, enjoy and explore as you wish.  Meals B

With your own personal car and chauffeur guide, this full-day Golden Circle tour can be paced to your comfort and personal style. Your sightseeing begins as you leave the city behind and travel into Thingvellir National Park, a unique geological site where two tectonic plates meet – and one of the few places where you can see the Mid-Atlantic Rift above sea level. As you descend into the valley, the steep cliffs that you’ll see are quite literally the edge North America; as you continue to the other side of the National Park, you’ll be ascending onto the Eurasian Continent! Reaching the tranquil shores of Lake Thingvallavatn, you’ll visit the remains of the world’s oldest democratic Parliament  , founded more than 1,000 years ago! Then thrill to one of Iceland’s most famous geological wonders – the Strokkur Geyser that regularly erupts 100 feet into the air. At the Golden Waterfall, you’ll behold a thunderous cascade of icy water that plunges into a deep gorge.

Before returning to your hotel, you’ll also experience one of Iceland’s most famous natural wonders: The geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon originate more than 6,000 feet below ground and reach the Earth’s surface at temperatures that usually range from 98 º to 104º. On its way to the surface, these waters absorb silica and other minerals that five the Lagoon its distinctive and captivating blue color.  Meals B

This day is yours to enjoy as you wish. You can explore on your own or add one of our available privately guided tours – maybe an excursion to the Westman Islands. Starting with a scenic overland journey along Iceland’s South Coast, you’ll board a cruise bound for the Westman Islands. Arriving on Heimaey, the largest in this 15-island archipelago, you’ll learn about the dramatic events that unfolded in 1973 when an eruption buried 400 homes under a deep layer of ash. Experience life on this remote island and see some of the homes that have only recently been excavated. You’ll learn more on guided tours of the Eldheimar Geological Museum and Sæheimar Natural History Museum. After lunch, this Westman Islands Tour continues in our custom RIB boats for an adventure cruise through the archipelago. See Surtsey Island c, a UNESCO World Heritage that was born of volcanic activity just 50 years ago, and go in search of marine life. Whales, dolphins and porpoises can be spotted year-round, and the summer months bring a rich variety of birdlife including Atlantic Puffins. Meals B

Reykjavik to Akureyri

After an early breakfast, you’ll be chauffeured to the airport for your included morning flight to Akureyri. On arrival, your local guide – a resident of the North Coast – will be waiting to take you on a full-day private tour. Heading east, you’ll travel along the picturesque Eyjafjordur coastline, with its stunning views of mountains and sea. At Godafoss Waterfall, you’ll behold a thundering cascade that plunges 40 feet across a chasm that stretches nearly 100 feet across. In the year 1000 after Christianity was declared the official religion of Iceland, statues of Norse Gods were hurled into the falls – earning these cascades its name as the “Waterfall of the Gods.” Not far away, you’ll behold the captivating beauty of Lake Myvatn. With an estimated 132,000 gallons of water plunging over a 320-foot wide chasm every second, the roaring Dettifoss Waterfall is said to be the most powerful cascade in all of Europe. Then visit the horseshoe-shaped Ásbyrgi Canyon before spending time in Húsavík. With only 2,000 residents and a lively harborfront, this friendly community offers a chance to experience life in the North. After sightseeing, we’ll take you back to Akureyri where you’ll spend the night at the inviting Hotel Kea.  Meals B
