Tailor Your Exploration of the Pantanal

The Amazon may be better known but the Pantanal is, in many ways, a better place to encounter South America’s diverse wildlife. The dense jungle growth of the Amazon is fascinating but it can make wildlife observation more difficult. In contrast, the open wetlands of the Pantanal are ideal for birdwatching and observing a variety of animals in their natural habitat. In fact, the Pantanal has the largest concentration of flora and fauna in the Americas and is home to fascinating species like Brazilian otters, alligators, blue macaws, parrots, toucans and Capybaras.

To immerse you in the wonders of the Pantanal, a variety of included excursions are offered here at Barranco Alto. You can consult with our Lodge naturalists to select the ones that are best suited for your personal interests and taste for adventure. Joining other guests and an expert naturalist, here are some of the adventures you might choose today:

Nature Walks: Led by an experienced naturalist guide, these excursions offer an intimate and gently-paced way to observe and learn about the flora and fauna.

Safari Drive:  Setting out in one of our Lodge’s comfortable 4x4 safari vehicles is a terrific way to explore farther afield. As conditions allow, these excursions can be combined with guided walks for a more intimate and up-close experience of the Pantanal’s diverse flora, fauna and topography.

Birdwatching: In the engaging company of an expert naturalist, these guided excursions offer a chance to observe some of the 400 species that are drawn to the area by the diverse eco-systems of the surrounding area – encompassing forest, grassland, lakes and the Rio Negro.

Deep in the Southern Pantanal

Enjoy another full-day of guided excursions designed to immerse you in the wild beauty of the Pantanal. With other Lodge guests and an engaging naturalist guide, here are some of the excursions that you might choose:

River Safari: Specially designed for minimal intrusion, our Lodge’s small boats have quiet engines that allow you to explore the Rio Negro without disturbing the wildlife. These river excursions are great for birdwatching and encountering giant river otters.

Canoe Adventure: The Lodge’s canoes can be taken out anytime you wish. Or join an organized sunrise canoe trip to experience the Pantanal as it comes to life for the day. A light al fresco breakfast at dawn highlights these morning adventures!

Photo Safari: Accompanied by an expert guide and traveling by jeep, you’ll follow a route that promises myriad opportunities to capture the raw beauty of the Pantanal and its wildlife inhabitants.
