Tailor Your Exploration

With moisture-laden trade winds blowing upward along the mountain slopes of the region, you’ll find clouds and fog hovering almost continuously in the upper canopy of the forest. Condensing onto the leaves and plants below, the moisture contributes to the extraordinary biodiversity of the Cloud Forest. Today you can tailor your exploration to your personal interests and taste for adventure with one of our included, privately-guided excursions:

Cloud Forest Hike: Accompanied by your own personal naturalist guide, you’ll learn about the myriad species that thrive in the Aguti Cloud Forest: More than 2,000 varieties of plants (420 of which are orchids!), 400 different birds, and literally thousands of types of moths, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. With sharp eyes, you’ll even observe many of these forest denizens.

Guided Night Hike: Spend the day relaxing or exploring some of the self-guided trails that wind through the Cloud Forest. This evening, you’ll embark on a thrilling nocturnal hike with your private naturalist guide. It’s a wonderful time to experience the night-time sounds of the Cloud Forest with a chance to observe the species that only become active with the setting sun.

El Trapiche Tour: Gain insight into local life at El Trapiche, a family run operation that includes sugar cane, coffee and cocoa plantations. Learn about the many steps that bring these products from the fields to your kitchen table and delight in the experience of riding in a traditional Costa Rican ox cart.

Bat Jungle Tour: Designed to introduce visitors to the amazing world of bats, the Bat Jungle in Monteverde offers a world class exhibit where 8 species of bats live in a simulated jungle environment. There’s even a special ultrasonic sound system that allows you to hear these creatures echo-locating and socializing with one another.

Sky Walk Hanging Bridges: Winding their way high above the shadowy forest floor, this complex of suspension bridges offers intimate exploration of the biologically rich and diverse forest canopy. And with insight from your private naturalist guide, this excursion will be as enlightening as it is exciting!
