Day
1

Upon arrival, you’ll be warmly greeted and escorted to the deluxe InterContinental Saigon Hotel. Settle in to your Deluxe Club Room and take the rest of this day to relax and enjoy as you wish.

After an early breakfast, you and your personal guide will board a speedboat for a journey along the Saigon River. Take in the passing vistas as you leave bustling city behind and make your way into the more rural landscapes of the countryside. Your destination this morning is the infamous Cu Chi Tunnels, the incredible underground network that was built by guerilla fighters beginning in 1940 and expanded throughout the Vietnam War. Marvel at secret trapdoors, underground kitchens, living quarters and even conference rooms. You’ll have ample opportunity to view the excavated areas from above; the more adventurous can explore the deeper second and even third-level tunnels.

Back in the city, you’ll tour Reunification Hall; formerly known as the Presidential Palace, it was towards this modern building that Communist takes rolled on the morning of April 30, 1975 as Saigon fell. From the 3rd floor, you’ll have lovely views across the palace grounds and gardens. Nearby, the War Remnants Museum offers a penetrating look into the ravages of the war as seen through the eyes of the Vietnamese people. This evening, our special jeep tour shows you Saigon’s landmarks by night and immerses you in the city’s vibrant dining scene and nightlife.   Meals B+L+D

This morning’s chauffeured journey takes you out of the city and into the rural district of Cai Be where you’ll board the inviting Cai Be Princess, a traditional Vietnamese riverboat made from native hardwoods and bamboo. Enjoy a refreshing beverage as you venture onto the timeless waterways of the Mekong Delta. Take in the bustling river traffic, witness timeless scenes of daily life along the shores and waterways and enjoy the beautiful scenery as the attentive crew serves tea and fruits to you and your fellow passengers.

From the small Delta island of Tan Phong, a rowing excursion explores the dense mangroves that line many of the Mekong’s canals and waterways. Returning to the Cai Be Princess, your cruise continues to  an old 19th-century home where you’ll step off for a guided visit and to learn about some of the local cottage industries that sustain many Delta families. For lunch, we’ve made reservations at Le Longanier, an inviting restaurant set in a Colonial-style villa surrounded by riverside gardens and fruit trees. Enjoy a post-luncheon stroll with your guide along a quiet Mekong canal before returning to your hotel in Ho Chi Minh City.  Meals B+L+D

We’ll take you to the airport this morning for your included flight to Danang – where you’ll be met and escorted to your awaiting vehicle for a pleasant drive that takes you past the picturesque Marble Mountains and China Beach. Arrive in Hoi An c and check in to your Deluxe Garden View Suite at the Anantara Hoi An, our enchanting resort on the banks of the Thu Bon River.

After time to refresh, join your personal guide for a walking tour in town. From the 16th to the 18th centuries, Hoi An was one of the wealthiest ports in all of Asia – home to Dutch, French, Portuguese, Arab, Japanese and Chinese merchants. Today, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its splendidly preserved architecture and ancient seafaring heritage. Your tour includes Chua Ong Pagoda, built in 1653, and Jinshang Temple – dedicated to the Goddess of the Sea and the protector of seafaring merchants. You’ll also visit the 200-year-old Tan Ky Ancestral House and the oft-photographed covered bridge, built by Japanese craftsmen in the 17th century. A pleasant cruise on the Thu Bon River is a wonderful way to conclude your exploration of this ancient, still lively port.  This evening’s dinner features the fine regional cuisine of Central Vietnam.  Meals B+D

Cycling + Boating in the Countryside

Anantara Hoi An Resort - Hoi An, Vietnam

After breakfast, a pleasant 15-minute bicycle ride with your guide immerses you in the morning rhythms of the region. Then board a small boat for a 35-minute cruise that will take you along the tranquil waterways deep into the rural landscapes of Quang Nam Province; it’s an intimate and  authentic way to experience the beauty and daily life along the river.

Then hop back on your bicycle to ride through the green paddy fields. You’ll stop at a number of small villages – each specializing in unique cottage industries from making rice paper to weaving mats for sleeping and other household uses. In Kim Bong, you’ll learn the colorful history of this ancient village, long celebrated for its boat-making traditions. Cycle back to Hoi An where the rest of your afternoon and evening are at leisure.  Meals B+L

You’ll be chauffeured back to the airport in Danang for your included flight northward to Hanoi. On arrival, you’ll be greeted and escorted by private car to the deluxe Hotel de l’Opera. Settle in to your Grand Deluxe Room and take some time to relax or explore as you wish.

Late this afternoon, our in-the-know resident expert will take you on a privately guided culinary adventure to experience the city’s vibrant food scene. Bustling by day, Hanoi’s Old Quarter is equally lively come nightfall as residents head out to enjoy the many food vendors and cafes that line these historic streets and alleyways. Begin with a stroll through a colorful night market and stop for a bowl of pho; now world-famous, this beef-and-noodle soup is a Vietnamese classic. Making your way along the bustling streets, you’ll have a chance to sample other local delicacies – like steamed rice rolls with mushroom and pork, a banh mi sandwich served on a baguette, or hot-off-the-grill chicken wings. End the night with a traditional Vietnamese dessert, tropical fruits and sweetened condensed milk drizzled over shaved ice, before returning to your hotel.  Meals B+D

Your private tour of the city begins this morning with the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, an impressive monument of marble, granite and precious woods. Visit the Temple of Literature, founded nearly 1,000 years ago, and sit down to lunch at one of our favorite restaurants in the city – popular for its traditional Hanoi-style cuisine. Then stroll in Old Hanoi as your private guide shares insight into the history and traditions of this colorful district, where ancient byways like Tin Street and Bamboo Street are named for the goods that have long been sold there. Continuing along labrynthine streets explored by few tourists, you’ll have a chance to peer into old temples and homes, meeting residents as your in-the-know guide shares insight.

Also here in the Old Quarter, you’ll visit Train Street to learn about the unusual daily routines of its residents: Twice a day, just before the train barrels down the street just feet from the buildings, drying clothes are taken inside, children are hustled indoors, bikes are quickly pulled to the side of the road, and residents duck into the nearest doorway or press themselves against the sides of the buildings – all done with the nonchalance of daily life! Take a break with a refreshing cup of Vietnamese coffee at a café overlooking Hoan Kiem Lake and then visit Ngoc Son Temple, built in the 18th century on a tiny island in the lake. End your sightseeing with a Water Puppet performance, a traditional and uniquely Vietnamese art form which started centuries ago – possibly in the nation’s flooded rice fields.  Meals B+L

Unhurried exploration of Angkor

After breakfast, your expert guide will be waiting to show you these amazing jungle ruins, a spectacular legacy of the once-mighty Khmer Empire. You’ll begin the day at Angkor Wat, the largest temple in the world with a volume of stone equaling that of the Cheops Pyramid in Egypt. Inspired by 12th century Hinduism, it took an estimated 30 years to build Angkor Wat, including the intricately carved bas-reliefs which adorn all four sides of the temple.

Enjoy lunch at Viroth’s Restaurant and then continue your touring with the monumental magnificence of Angkor Thom. The last capital of the Khmers is renowned for its impressive Elephant Terrace, the Terrace of the Leper King, and the stunning Bayon temple. This 12th century masterpiece lies at the very centre of Angkor Thom and is an archaeological wonder of symmetry and grandeur. Late in the day, your guide will lead you to a prime vantage point to witness the sunset over Angkor. Dine tonight at the Sugar Palm Restaurant.  Meals B,L,D
