On arrival, you’ll be escorted to the luxurious Ciragan Palace Kempinski. Tonight, enjoy the fine Turkish cuisine at Develi Nisantasi. Meals D

Peel away layers of history, starting on the site of the Hippodrome. Then marvel at the 21,000 Iznik tiles that adorn the Blue Mosque and tour the 6th-century Hagia Sophia c. After lunch, descend into the Basilica Cistern with its 336 marble columns. At the Grand Bazaar, take a break at one of the historic cafes. Meals B+L

Start your day at the Topkapi Palace, fabled residence of sultans, courtiers, concubines and eunuchs for nearly 400 years starting in the 15th century. At the colorful Spice Market, once the last stop for Silk Road merchants, our private Tasting Tour offers an intimate and genuine experience of local life and food. Along the way, our guide will introduce you to some of the friendly merchants and chefs. A delightful cruise on the Bosphorus promises fine views of mansions, mosques and wooded hills on both the Asian and European shores. Meals B

Ancient Troy + Alexandria Troas

Caeli Hotel - Canakkale, Turkey

Cross the Dardanelles this morning to visit the site of ancient Troy c where excavations have revealed successive settlements going back 4,000 years. Ancient defensive walls and a Roman temple are among the sites to be seen. After lunch, you’ll tour the ruins of Alexandria Troas, an ancient port that dates to the 4th century BCE. Return to the Caeli Hotel for dinner and overnight. Meals B+L+D

Onward to Cappadocia

Return to Istanbul for your flight to Kayseri where you’ll be escorted to the Argos Inn, set on the grounds of a historic cave monastery in the ancient village of Uchisar. Meals B+L+D

Floating silently above in a hot air balloon is the best way to experience these deep valleys, honeycombed hills, and towering rock formations. After breakfast, explore the “fairy chimneys” of the Devrent and Pasabag Valleys. Then tour the cave churches at the Goreme Open-Air Museum c with their 1,000-year-old frescoes. Have lunch at Ziggy Cafe, set in a restored stone house with views over the town of Urgup, and see skilled artisans and weavers at work in the village of Avanos. Enjoy a mesmerizing performance by the Whirling Dervishes and dine with a local family in their home. Meals B+L+D

Cappadocia from below

Experience life in the timeless village of Ayvali, off-the-beaten path and rarely visited. After an organic farm-to-table lunch at Aravan Evi, you’ll descend deep underground to explore the tunnels, kitchens, living quarters and even stables of Kaymakli Underground City, built by early Christians to hide from Roman soldiers and later Ottoman conquests. Meals B+L+D

Fly back to Istanbul for another night at the Ciragan Palace Kempinski Hotel. This evening’s dinner at a rooftop restaurant offers views over this exotic city. Meals B+D

From Istanbul to Izmir + Ephesus

At the end of our 10-day Turkey through the Ages journey, you’ll be escorted to the airport for your included flight to Izmir. On arrival, our experienced local guide will take you on an in-depth tour of Ephesus, one of the most important cities of antiquity. Enter along an ancient marble-paved roadway to see remarkable archaeological ruins including the steam-heated Baths of Scholastica, the Library of Celsus, and the great amphitheater where Paul preached to the Ephesians. Not far from Ephesus, you’ll also visit the stone house where it is believed the Virgin Mary spent the last years of her life and the Basilica of St. John, built by the Emperor Justinian in the 6th century.
 
Continue to the lively port city of Izmir and check in deluxe SwissĂ´tel Grand Efes. Meals B

Ancient Pergamum

After breakfast, you’ll enjoy a guided tour of Pergamum. Among its impressive ruins from the days of Alexander the Great are the Sacred Way, the once-magnificent Acropolis with its Altar of Zeus, and the remains of a world-renowned ancient library that once held 200,000 books written on parchment. After sightseeing, you’ll journey to Gobeller to have lunch with a local family in their home. Learn about Turkey’s culinary traditions and experience a slice of village life.
 
Before returning to Izmir, you’ll also spend time exploring The Asclepeion of Kos. Dating back to the 4th century B.C. and excavated in 1902, this remarkable site was an ancient center of healing and learning. It was regarded as a great medical center of its age, drawing the sick and infirm from across Asia Minor who traveled here for healing and treatment.
 
You’ll have time to relax and refresh before this evening’s dinner at Adabeyi. Set in a waterfront building designed by Alexander Gustave Eiffel, this inviting restaurant is known for its traditional Meze (small-plate dishes, like appetizers) and fresh seafood.  Meals B+L+D
